Fishing 101: Orange Beach Style

Never held a rod before? No sweat. We'll show you the ropes, from baiting your hook to setting the perfect drag. We use light tackle that's easy to handle, perfect for newbies and fun for experienced anglers looking to finesse their technique. Depending on what's biting, we might be bottom fishing for Black Drum, sight casting for Redfish, or drifting live bait for Bluefish. It's all about adapting to what the fish want, and that's where our local know-how comes in handy. You'll pick up tips and tricks that'll serve you well long after your trip's over.

Target Species Breakdown

Red Snapper: These guys are the rockstars of the Gulf. With their bright red scales and bulldog fighting style, they're a blast to catch and even better to eat. The season's limited, so when it's on, it's go time. They typically hang around structure in deeper water, so when we're targeting them, be ready for some arm-burning action.

Redfish: Also known as Red Drum, these copper-colored beauties are a staple of inshore fishing. They love to cruise the shallows, often revealing their location with a tell-tale tail in the air. Redfish put up a great fight and are available year-round, making them a reliable target for anglers of all skill levels.

Southern Flounder: Masters of camouflage, Flounder are the ninjas of the seafloor. They're ambush predators that lie in wait for unsuspecting bait to swim by. While they might not put up the strongest fight, the challenge is in the presentation and the reward is in the pan – they're some of the best-eating fish in the Gulf.

Bluefish: These toothy critters are like the pit bulls of the sea – all muscle and attitude. They hunt in schools and when they're on the feed, the action can be non-stop. Bluefish are great sport on light tackle and put up a scrappy fight that'll keep you on your toes.

Black Drum: The gentle giants of inshore waters, Black Drum can grow to impressive sizes. They're known for their distinctive chin barbels and their powerful, thudding strikes. While the bigger ones are typically released, the "puppy drum" make for excellent table fare.

Why Anglers Can't Get Enough

Black Drum

Black drum are the bulldogs of inshore fishing - not flashy, but boy can they pull. These cousins of redfish typically run 5-30 pounds in our waters, with some topping 50 pounds. You'll find them rooting around oyster beds, pilings, and mudflats in 3-20 feet of water. Spring is prime time as they spawn, but we catch them year-round. Anglers enjoy their strong, steady fights and distinctive croaking sound. For eating, keep the smaller ones under 15 pounds - they're excellent on the grill. To land a big drum, use fresh crab or shrimp on a fish-finder rig. When you feel that telltale thump, let them take it for a few seconds before setting the hook. Be ready for a battle - these bruisers will test your gear and your arms! There's nothing quite like the drumming sound of a big black drum on the line.

Black Drum

Bluefish

Bluefish are hard-fighting speedsters that show up in our waters spring through fall. They typically run 2-5 pounds inshore but can reach over 20 pounds. You'll find schools of blues churning up bait on the surface, often in open water or along beaches. They're most active in summer when water temperatures peak. Anglers love bluefish for their aggressive strikes and powerful runs. While not the best table fare, smaller ones are good smoked or grilled fresh. To catch blues, look for birds working over baitfish, then cast metal spoons or topwater poppers into the fray. Work lures fast - blues love to chase. Watch those teeth when unhooking them! Pro tip: bring wire leaders, as their razor-sharp teeth will slice through mono. Pound for pound, bluefish give you one of the best fights in inshore waters.

Bluefish

Red Snapper

Red snapper are prized catches in our Gulf waters. These beautiful pink-to-red fish usually run 5-15 pounds inshore, but can grow over 30 pounds offshore. You'll find them hanging around structure like reefs and wrecks in 60-250 feet of water. Snapper fishing is best from June through August during the short federal season. Anglers love battling these hard-fighting fish as they try to dive back to structure. Their firm white fillets are some of the tastiest in the Gulf too. To land a big one, use heavy tackle and drop a live bait like cigar minnows or pinfish down to the bottom. When you feel that telltale thump, set the hook hard and start reeling – these powerful fish will try to break you off in the structure below. Nothing beats the rush of bringing up a trophy red snapper from the depths!

Red Snapper

Redfish

Redfish are a favorite inshore target here in Orange Beach. These copper-colored beauties typically run 20-30 inches and put up a great fight. You'll find them in shallow flats and around structure like oyster beds, especially in 1-4 feet of water. They love to tail in the shallows, making for exciting sight fishing. Redfish are most active in spring and fall, but we catch them year-round. Anglers enjoy their strong runs and the distinctive black spot near their tail. For eating, smaller ones under 27 inches are best. My top tip: when you see them tailing, cast a gold spoon or soft plastic shrimp just past them and slowly retrieve it into their field of vision. Be ready for an explosive strike! With their delicious meat and sporting qualities, redfish are the perfect inshore species for both new and experienced anglers.

Redfish

Southern Flounder

Southern flounder are odd-looking but delicious flatfish we target in our inshore waters. They usually run 15-20 inches and 2-5 pounds. You'll find them lying camouflaged on sandy or muddy bottoms in bays, inlets and around structure. Fall is prime flounder season as they move to deeper water to spawn. Anglers enjoy the unique challenge of hooking these ambush predators. Their firm white meat is also top-notch eating. To catch flounder, slowly drag a live bait like bull minnows or finger mullet along the bottom. When you feel a bite, resist the urge to set the hook immediately. Instead, drop your rod tip and give the flounder time to fully take the bait. After a few seconds, reel up slack and set the hook hard. It takes practice, but landing a doormat flounder is truly satisfying.
